Light, casual, simple and slightly industrial. Plywood is all of these things, and, oh yeah, it’s cost effective (cheap!). Just a simple stain can make the most basic material look polished and purposeful, but even if you go raw, the right attention to detail and planning can turn a material that used to be thought of as “half done”, into a look that conveys “less is more, WAY more”.

At Leighton By Design, we talk a lot about bringing the outdoors in and one way to do that is with plywood. What better way to tone down and warm up your space? On a ceiling it evokes a feeling that you’re in a modern cabin; use it on a wall for texture – to rough up a room that would otherwise be all white. There are so many gorgeous wood options out there these days and plywood should be considered as a great balance in the traditional painted and polished room.

Clean and Finished

Clean and Finished and Matte

Here at LBD, we have pretty strong opinions on this topic.  In fact, we think if you can’t finish a job well with proper attention paid to the necessary details, then maybe you’re not ready to start a project at all!  How do you like that?

What we’re really talking about is paint www.benjaminmoore.com/.  With a little attention paid to prep work, you could save yourself time and headache when it comes time to apply paint.  We just finished a gorgeous remodel of a downtown loft and once it was all complete with new floors, kitchen and baths, the one glaring thing that stood out like a sore thumb was the base and trim.  Straight out of the early 80′s, it dragged everything down.  This could have easily been a total slamdunk with a little latex.

Don’t forget, you also have quite a few choices when it comes to the paint itself.  Between latex, oil, low VOC and type of sheen, this stage can be confusing.  We have a lot of experience with this and can help you make an informed decision based on light reflection, purpose and desired effect.  When in doubt, flat!

This is usually the last step in every remodel or renovation.  Painting is the last thing a homeowner thinks of, it’s usually given the smallest part of the budget, but it’s always an important item on our list.  We know that a good paint job can make a huge impact even if you’re doing something as simple as installing a new window or repairing a ceiling.  Having a professional finishing touch can make your home look better.

Tub With a View

What a beautiful spot to sit, relax and reflect and dream.  Doesn’t it seem like the tub is perched in a tree?  This is such a great example of capitalizing on your surroundings and making your home a part of it’s setting.  So peaceful.

The homes I’m drawn to tend to be fairly simple, with beautiful materials, but most importantly, they WORK!   I think we all want our daily lives to be a little easier, a little better, and this starts with our surroundings.  Now is the time to re-think.  How can I create more storage, is there a place to add another window and bring the outdoors in?  Whether you’re starting from the ground up, or perfecting the home you love, we can help.

Every year at this time, when we feel like pressing the reset button, let’s start at home.  Form, function, beauty.
